Fifteen years. That's how long it's been since the Manitoba government missed its first self-imposed deadline to protect our threatened caribou.

Dear Premier Wab Kinew:

It’s well past time for the Manitoba government to take strong action to protect our threatened woodland caribou.

Woodland caribou have been provincially listed as a threatened species since 2006. The Manitoba woodland caribou recovery strategy released that same year committed the province to producing recovery plans for woodland caribou by 2009. It’s now fourteen years later and there are still no plans.

I appreciate the new agreement with the federal government for the province to have caribou recovery plans complete by 2025 for the high-risk caribou populations. I strongly urge you to meet this timeline. I stress that the permanent protection of large intact habitats where industry and its road networks are prohibited needs to be a key component of the recovery plans.

Background

Woodland caribou have been provincially listed as a threatened species since 2006. The Manitoba woodland caribou recovery strategy released that same year committed the province to producing recovery plans for woodland caribou by 2009. Though an updated provincial recovery strategy was released in 2015, there are still no plans.

The federal government requested that provinces and territories complete plans for boreal woodland caribou recovery by October 2017. Manitoba ignored this request.

In December 2022, the Governments of Canada and Manitoba finalised an agreement for the conservation and recovery of the woodland caribou in Manitoba. The federal government is giving the province almost a million dollars to do what it has failed to do so far.

The initial recovery plans for some caribou populations are now scheduled for 2025.
