Protect the Eastern Slopes of Alberta's Rocky Mountains, and our headwaters, from coal with legislation TODAY.

Government of Alberta MUST develop a coal policy that protects Albertans and our future.

Since the threat of coal first appeared, CPAWS Northern Alberta and CPAWS Southern Alberta, and Albertans, have been clear that what we need and want is legislation that permanently prohibits coal mining in the Eastern Slopes of Alberta’s Rocky Mountains.

The lands and waters of this region, and the communities they support, are too important — and anything less than legislation prohibiting all new coal mines would be insufficient to provide the protection they need.

For years, poll after poll has demonstrated that the overwhelming majority of Albertans oppose coal mining in the Eastern Slopes. Indeed, the Chairman of the Coal Policy Committee, who was charged with consulting Albertans on a new coal policy in 2021, stated “Polling and departmental surveys indicate that approximately seven, or perhaps even eight, in ten Albertans oppose, or are not in favour of, policies that would accelerate or expand the mining of coal in the Eastern Slopes of Alberta.”

Now, Albertans are once again demanding legislation that protects the Rockies and our headwaters. Thousands of Albertans volunteered their time to canvass for the Water Not Coal campaign, and over 200,000 Albertans took time to sign the petition — which asked for permanent legislation to protect the Eastern Slopes — in what may be the largest environmental movement in our province’s history.
