Help us protect our National Capital Greenbelt!

The National Capital Greenbelt is the largest of its kind in the world, a rare mosaic of important habitats and sustainable farmland supporting both nature and people. But the threat of encroaching infrastructure and development projects is looming. Many parts of the Greenbelt have already been lost to development. We cannot afford to lose more. Legislative protection will help secure a future where species thrive; local livelihoods are supported, and the many environmental benefits of urban green spaces are here to stay.

Let’s protect our National Capital Greenbelt — for wildlife, people, and future generations. Let it be an example of Canada’s commitment to nature.

To maximize its impact, your letter will also be sent to the Minister of Government Transformation, Public Works and Procurement, the Honourable Joel Lightbound, the Minister of Environment, Climate Change and Nature, the Honourable Julie Dabrusin and the Secretary of State for Nature, the Honourable Nathalie Provost.

Thank you for taking the plight of nature seriously and promising to invest time and resources towards advancing nature conservation through Canada’s Force for Nature funding!

In a time of climate change and biodiversity loss together with economic uncertainty, making sure our greenspaces are protected and cared for is a critical step towards a stable future. This is especially true for urban green spaces such as the National Capital Greenbelt.

This historic stretch of land cradling the city of Ottawa provides rare habitats for endangered species while also providing a wide range of services to the citizens of our nation's capital. Locally produced food, recreational opportunities, water and air filtration, flood and drought mitigations are just some of the many benefits that would disappear if we were to lose this precious green space to infrastructure and development projects.

I urge you to make the NCR Greenbelt one of your proposed 15  National Urban Parks - with clear boundaries recognized in an Act of Parliament, strong protection measures, and a management plan centered around sustainable farming and nature conservation.

Together, we can protect the National Capital Greenbelt for future generations.
