Honorable
Andrew
Boitchenko
Government of Alberta
Dear Minister Boitchenko, Like many Albertans, I value Kananaskis Country as a place to get outside, explore the mountains, and experience the kind of wild, accessible public lands that make Alberta special. For this reason, I am writing to express my serious concern about the Fortress Mountain All-Season Resort Master Plan. I urge you to reject this proposal and require that any subsequent proposal respects the character and objectives of Kananaskis Country, is designed to minimize commercial infrastructure and avoid impacts to wildlife and water. The current proposal would expand development into sensitive landscapes and significantly increase year-round intensive use of areas that have historically supported low-impact recreation and functional wildlife habitat. This proposal enables long‑term, exclusive control of large areas of public land by private developers, restricting traditional activities such as public hiking, fishing, and informal recreation, and limiting Albertans’ ability to freely access landscapes that are meant to belong to everyone. Kananaskis Country supports numerous valued fish and wildlife habitats, including grizzly bears, wolverine, and bull trout. The proposed resort would bring greatly increased human presence into this habitat, reducing habitat availability and security, and increasing human-wildlife conflict. As concerns about water use, availability and impacts to aquatic systems increase, it is counterintuitive to allow new water-intensive commercial developments in source water regions that are currently closed to new water licenses. Approving major water-dependent infrastructure is both ecologically and economically irresponsible. Kananaskis Country is one of Alberta's most valued landscapes for outdoor recreation and wildlife habitats. Decisions about development in this region will shape the future of these public lands for generations. I respectfully urge you to reject approval of the Fortress Mountain Master Plan and require that any subsequent proposal respects the character and objectives of Kananaskis Country and is designed minimize commercial infrastructure and avoid impacts to wildlife and water, in alignment with the priorities Albertans have for their parks and public lands.
