St. Mary’s River

Please send a THANK YOU letter to the Minister of Fisheries and Oceans.

The federal government has just declared the St. Mary’s River to be a candidate “Ecologically Significant Area” under the Fisheries Act. This is good news for the river and local communities working to protect it!

The St. Mary’s River, located in eastern mainland Nova Scotia, supports an important population of Atlantic salmon and numerous rare species, including wood turtles and globally rare freshwater mussels. The sooner this area is protected, the better.

An Ecologically Significant Area is a new type of protected area in Canada. It builds upon the conservation work already being done by the St. Mary’s River Association.

Please take a moment to send a thank you letter to the Minister of Fisheries and Oceans for declaring the St. Mary’s River to be a candidate Ecologically Significant Area. When a government does the right thing, it is important that it is acknowledged.

The best letters are short and personal. We’ve created a template for the letter to make this quick, but please add your own comments if you can. Saying things like “this matters to me”, or “I care about the St. Mary’s River”, or explaining your personal connection to the place, is the most effective.

By sending a letter right now, you are letting the federal government know that they are doing the right thing for the St. Mary’s River.  One of the most ecologically significant places in Nova Scotia.

Thank you for speaking up!
