Minister
Todd
Loewen
Government of Alberta
Dear Minister Loewen, I am writing today to request that you set a clear direction for sustainable forestry and stop all planned logging in the Horse Lake and Aura Sand Hills in the Ghost Watershed. Continued clearcut logging in this area - in addition to the already considerable cuts that have been made since 2013 - risks the loss of important wetland complexes, habitat for a wide range of species including wolves and bears, and significant damage to some of the last remaining critical habitat for threatened native trout species like the Bull and Westslope Cutthroat through erosion from logging, haul roads, and stream crossings. The Ghost Watershed provides and regulates the water that flows into the Bow River, which is not only the source of drinking water to Calgary, but also helps mitigate the severity of floods and droughts in the region. The wetlands surrounding Horse Lake filter water, moderate stream flows, and provide key habitat for wildlife. Clearcutting risks drying out these wetlands and impeding their hydrological function. The South Saskatchewan Regional Plan clearly states that "Watershed management and headwaters protection is the priority. Forests will be managed with this as the highest priority (including water storage, recharge and release functions)." Given the importance of the Ghost River watershed in supplying water that flows into the Bow River, a precautionary principle to avoid further harvest near the Horse Lake wetlands must be applied.
